Dr. Ennis - Internationally renowned wound expert, leader of the Wound Care Team

Primary Wound Care Team
"I had two painful ulcers that no one could heal for years until I went to St. James. They split atoms while others split wood. Today, my wounds are completely healed and pain-free."
ST. JAMES CENTER FOR COMPREHENSIVE WOUND AND DISEASE MANAGEMENT

Expert care to optimize wound healing

An estimated five million Americans live with non-healing wounds. At the St. James Center for Comprehensive Wound and Disease Management, patients with non-healing wounds can get customized care and innovative treatments. Under the leadership of wound specialist William Ennis, DO, FACOS, the Center has a multidisciplinary team dedicated to individualized treatment and total patient care. Adults who suffer from non-healing circulatory wounds, diabetic foot wounds, pressure wounds, surgical wounds and traumatic wounds can all find the treatment they need for successful wound healing.

Treatment Success

The wound care team takes an aggressive approach to wound healing, focusing on limb preservation and often succeeding where others have failed. The average wound healing time at St. James is just 12-14 weeks, plus or minus 4 weeks. The team has published more than 50 scientific papers advancing patient care well beyond St. James. For our wound care patients, this means direct access to the most experienced clinicians and advanced treatments and technologies.

Team Approach

The primary wound care team, lead by Dr. Ennis, includes a network of wound specialists, vascular surgeons, plastic surgeons, physical therapists and nurses who work together to find underlying causes. In addition to examining the wound, the patient's history is carefully reviewed. A patient's underlying medical conditions and circumstances determine the cause of the wound and influence treatment decisions.

Many factors can contribute to a non-healing wound and can make a significant difference in the method of treatment and healing time. Chronic, non-healing wounds occur most often in adults who suffer from:
  • Diabetes
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Stroke
  • Vascular disease
  • Cancer
  • Obesity
  • Trauma
  • Surgical or spinal cord injury complications
Close communications with the referring physician and detailed reports ensure your physician is involved in your care throughout the process.

A nurse case manager works with each of our patients to achieve their goals in light of any underlying diseases as well as their overall health status. The wound care team also works closely with families to educate them on the treatment options and to better help in their loved one's recovery. An ongoing education and an update of patient goals throughout treatment is presented as needed.
