Emergency Services

The purpose of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is to provide the community with 24-hour emergency care and treatment of the ill and injured, while recognizing the individual needs of the patients. Prehospital emergency medicine is a relatively new field in medicine, therefore emergency personnel are required to continually expand their knowledge base to keep up with this ever changing environment. Their expertise must span from the neonate to the elderly patient, each with his/ her own needs, influenced by multicultural backgrounds. Franciscan St. James Ambulance Service

Franciscan St. James Health also operates an internal Ambulance service. The Franciscan St. James Health Ambulance Service serves the south suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, but its boundaries span from downtown Chicago to Kankakee and the Indiana state line to Ottawa. We serve the emergent needs of more than 500,000 city and county residents and transport patients from Franciscan St. James Health's hospitals to tertiary or specialty care, long term care facilities, their residences, or between Franciscan St. James Health's two hospital campuses for emergent treatment. The hospitals depend greatly upon this service to quickly and safely transport distressed neonatal, cardiac, or other patients requiring emergent interventions. In 2010, we responded to approximately 7,000 requests for service.

The emergency medical and safety needs of our patients are always our first priority.

Our Staff

Two shift supervisors, eight paramedics, and sixteen EMT-Bs staff our Franciscan St. James Health ambulances, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Some of our staff members have been with us less than a year, many have been with our organization between 3 and 7 years, and some have been serving the citizens of Chicago's south suburbs for more than 20 years.
