| “People suffer needlessly out of embarrassment and fear. We’re very sensitive to this and succeed in putting our patients at ease, allowing us to make the correct diagnosis and formulate an effective treatment plan.”
– Scott Brill, MD, FACS |
The St. James Center for Colon and Rectal Surgery, located on our Olympia Fields campus, is dedicated solely to the expert evaluation and treatment of diseases of the colon and rectum.
The St. James Center for Colon and Rectal Surgery does more than provide outstanding care for those with colon or rectal cancer. It utilizes advanced technologies and treatments to heal the more than 50 percent of adults who suffer from some type of colorectal condition or disease.
The center is headed by board-certified, fellowship-trained colon and rectal surgeon Scott Brill, MD, FACS. While most physicians receive only limited training in colorectal disease and often lack equipment and experience to properly and painlessly examine these areas, Dr. Brill and his team specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions ranging from those as common as hemorrhoids, to those as life-threatening as colorectal cancer.
Dr. Brill and his staff realize that many people who suffer from colorectal disorders have difficulty discussing their problems and avoid seeking help out of embarrassment or fear. At the St. James Center for Colon and Rectal Surgery, care is provided in a compassionate, caring, and discrete setting, putting patients at ease while diagnosing and treating their troubling, painful, and sometimes life-threatening problems.
When it comes to preventing and treating colorectal ailments, knowledge is powerful. For example, did you know:
- Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death and one of the most preventable through regular screenings.
- Men and women are equally at risk for colon cancer, a risk that increases after age 40.
- Diverticular disease affects about 50 percent of Americans by age 60 and nearly 100 percent by age 80.
- Fecal incontinence affects two to three percent of the general population and 67 percent of those patients are women under 65 who sustained an injury due to childbirth.
- Internal and external hemorrhoids are due to multiple factors and are easily treated to give lasting relief from pain and discomfort, even when "high-fiber" intake has failed.
At the St. James Center for Colon and Rectal Surgery, patients receive clinically advanced care for such common conditions as hemorrhoids or diverticular disease, as well as more life-threatening conditions such as colon cancer. Utilizing diagnostic and treatment technologies only available at St. James, the Center also provides effective treatments for fecal incontinence, anal abscesses, fistulas and fissures.
No matter what the condition, our team works to ensure that each patient receives an accurate, timely diagnosis and a treatment plan customized to achieve the best possible outcome. For those patients with cancer, for example, our team works collaboratively with physicians and others at the Patricia A. Joyce Comprehensive Cancer Institute to ensure the complete continuum of care is provided in the best, most accessible manner.
