The decision to pursue surgical intervention for weight loss is a personal one. Typically individuals who consider surgery have had multiple unsuccessful attempts at weight loss.
Candidacy is determined by Body Mass Index (BMI), a mathematical equation comparing height and weight. The Lap Band ® System is approved for use in adults who meet the following BMI criteria:
Your insurance company may also request proof of obesity for at least 5 years and/or 3-6 month participation in a comprehensive weight management program.
*Insurance companies most likely will not cover surgery for individuals who fall in the 30 -34.9 BMI range. However, our staff can assist you to try and obtain coverage or explore self-payment options.
Why I had surgery:
I chose to have surgery because it was kind of last resort for me. I had been trying to lose weight ever since I could remember and I am 23 years old, which is not very old at all. I have struggled with weight all my life. I tried almost every diet that I could think of and did pretty good until I regressed and gained all of the weight back. With the lap band in place, you have a constant reminder and you can't regress. Choosing to have surgery was definitely something I do not regret. Really, I wish I had done it sooner. Before my journey I was a total of 348lbs. Now today I am 281lbs. THAT'S 67LBS!!! My confidence is better, I work out more, and I just feel better. I chose surgery because it was a life and death situation and if I didn't do something quick, things would have gotten much worse. I am very happy with my decision and would recommend it to anyone.
