2 weeks prior to surgery

At this point your surgery has been scheduled and your preoperative testing is complete. There are three tasks to complete prior to surgery.

  • Meet with Dr. Shayani one additional time for a pre-operative History and Physical and to review any questions you may have. This is a brief appointment usually lasting 15 minutes
  • Schedule the pre-op “Succcess” Class. In this two-hour class you will learn what to expect the day of surgery, the diet before surgery, discharge instructions, lifestyle recommendations for long-term success and post-operative diet phases. The two-hour class is scheduled several times per month including mornings and evenings.
  • One week prior to surgery you will be asked to follow an Atkins-type diet. Details about the diet will be reviewed in the pre-op “Success” Class.

Same Day Surgery

Surgery is completed at Franciscan St. James in Chicago Heights, IL. You will need to have a family member or friend bring you to the hospital and home from the procedure. Due to the effects of anesthesia you will not be permitted to drive immediately after surgery. Surgery is typically completed in two hours or less and the vast majority of patients are home by mid afternoon.

The staff at St. James in Chicago Heights has been providing exceptional care to Dr. Shayani’s patients for over three years. Weekly we hear compliments about how wonderful they were at helping patients feel comfortable before and after surgery.

Post-Surgical Follow-Up

Follow-up is critical for success after the Lap Band ® system is placed. All patients are seen one week after surgery to ensure optimal recovery and review diet guidelines. Like many other weight management programs, regular follow up and accountability are keys to success. As you may know, the band is adjustable. Over time, the band can be adjusted to personalize your care, maximize weight loss and portion control. Adjustments are complete during a quick office procedure. During the first year, the majority of patients follow-up every 4-6 weeks after the band is placed and as needed thereafter. At any time you need assistance or support, our staff is here for you.
