Getting Started

The first step in seeking surgery for weight loss is to learn if you are a candidate and understanding insurance or financing options. The St. James Center for Bariatric Surgery and Dr. Shayani accepts most major insurance plans. Our team of experts will help you throughout the entire processes, making it simple, easy and seamless. We work hard so you have the most accurate information at all times. Our goal is to provide care without surprises decreasing anxiety and worry about coverage or payment. The first step is to inquire by calling 1-800-STJAMES or completing a quick on-line form.

Unlike most surgical procedures, insurance companies have specific medical policies for bariatric surgery outlining the steps necessary for coverage. Your insurance company may require any of the following:

  • Proof that you have been obese for at least 5 years
  • A letter of recommendation from your primary care provider
  • Medical documentation that you have participated in a 3-6 month multidisciplinary month weight loss program including diet, increased physical activity and lifestylemodification. To assist you satisfy this requirement and prepare you for surgery, we offer the New Life Program
  • Psychological Evaluation. Our psychologist Mark Conard, PhD, is available for psychological evaluations and post-operative support and counseling.

Our staff is dedicated to getting you the help and information you need. Between 2009 and 2010 97.2% of individuals who completed a surgical consultation were approved for surgery with the help of the St. James Team! If, for some reason, you do not have coverage for Lap Band ® System placement, we can guide you through self payment options. For the past 5 years we have been successful at helping individuals, just like you, navigate this process, obtain approval and undergo surgical intervention to win the battle against obesity.
