Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP).
The Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP) has been accrediting healthcare facilities for over 60 years. It is one of the few voluntary accreditation programs in the United States authorized by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), formerly HCFA, to survey hospitals under Medicare. The HFAP accreditation process is a cost-effective means to validate the quality of care provided by a facility. The program is recognized nationally by the federal government, state governments, insurance carriers and managed care organizations.

BlueCrossBlueShield of Illinois recognized St. James Hospital as a Blue Distinction Center for Cariac Care. Blue Distinction® is a designation awarded by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies to medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality healthcare. The designation is based on rigorous, evidence-based, objective selection criteria established in collaboration with expert physicians’ and medical organizations’ recommendations.
In 2008,
United Healthcare recognized St. James Hospital as a UnitedHealth Premium Cardiac Specialty Center.® The UnitedHealth Premium® Cardiac Specialty Centers designation program is a voluntary program that designates facilities offering quality, cost-effective cardiac procedures and cardiac care services.
UnitedHealthcare developed the UnitedHealth Premium Specialty Center designation program to give its members information about, and access to, cardiac hospitals meeting rigorous quality criteria.
In 2008, the
American Heart Association recognized St. James Hospital with a Get With The Guidelines–Coronary Artery Disease Silver Performance Achievement Award ® (GWTG–CAD)
This award recognizes Hospitals’ commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of cardiac care that effectively improves treatment of patients hospitalized with coronary artery disease.
Under GWTG–CAD, patients are started on aggressive risk reduction therapies such as cholesterol-lowering drugs, aspirin, ACE inhibitors and beta-blockers in the hospital and receive smoking cessation/ weight management counseling as well as referrals for cardiac rehabilitation before they are discharged. Hospitals that receive the GWTG-CAD Silver Performance Achievement Award have demonstrated for at least one year that 85 percent of its coronary patients (without contraindications) are discharged following the American Heart Association’s recommended treatment guidelines.
In 2004 and 2005,
Thomson Reuters recognized St. James Hospital as a Top 100 Cardiovascular Hospital. Thomson Reuters examines the performance of hospitals by analyzing clinical outcomes for patients diagnosed with heart failure and heart attacks and for those who received coronary bypass surgery and angioplasties.
The 100 Top Hospitals study focused on short-term, acute care, non-federal U.S. hospitals that treat a broad spectrum of cardiology patients. Thomson Reuters researchers analyzed 2004 and 2005 Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data, 2005 Medicare cost reports, and data from other sources. They scored hospitals in key performance areas: risk-adjusted medical mortality, risk-adjusted surgical mortality, risk-adjusted complications, core measures score, percentage of coronary bypass patients with internal mammary artery use, procedure volume, severity-adjusted average length of stay, and wage- and severity-adjusted average cost.
